CLONEEN OPENING A GREAT SUCCESS

All the planning and hard work of the officers and members of Cloneen Hurling Club came to fruition on Sunday 22nd April with the official opening of their excellent playing pitch and club complex in Clogh. This was the day that senior officials of the club had looked forward to for some time and the happy smiles on Sunday night was proof that everything had gone to plan.

The marvellous playing pitch and it’s surrounds looked top class as activities got under way at 3.30 with an under 8 hurling game between the host club and Conahy Shamrocks, home club of GAA President Nicky Brennan. The second gane was at under 11 between the same two clubs.

After this game, the two Cloneen panels lined up behind the Killeshin Pipe Band on the green at Cois na hAbhann beside the ground and the swelling crowd applauded generously as band and young hurlers paraded through the main gates and onto the beautifullu manicured playing pitch. The band continued to play a wide selection of melodies which pleased the crowd greatly while the green and white clad youngsters formed a guard of honour for the All Ireland champions and their Laois opponents as they exited the dressing rooms onto the pitch for their match.

There was an extra buzz when ‘King’ Henry Shefflin led out the Kilkenny team for the first time as captain. It was also his first appearance in the black and amber since the All Ireland final last September.

The match was played in good spirit in bright sunshine and was entertaing right through. While the superiority of the champions was evident throughout, Laois put in a good performance and coach Damien Fox can be pleased with his charges who were never overawed by the power of the opposition. The final score was 2-19 to 0-14 in favour of the Cats. The game was refereed by local whistler Eamon Mansfield who can be pleased with his evenings work. He was assisted on the sidelines by Timahoe referee John O’Neill and Erin’s Own man Ger O’Grady.

After the game, both sets of players and their mentors were presented with beautiful Thomond Crystal clocks as a memento of the occasion. The players and officials were then treated to a meal in the state of the art handball court which was carpeted and adorned with fresh flowers, while a large number of visitors were given tea and sandwiches in the function room.

The official opening ceremony took place at half time of the match. Following an ecumenical prayer and blessing by Rev. Thomas Canon Sherlock and Fr. Denis Purcell C.C. Moneenroe, Ned Quinn, Chairman of Kilkenny County Board unveiled a limestone plaque to declare the facility open.

Among the 2,000 strong attendance were a number of GAA officials and some well known politicians. From Kilkenny County Board were Vice Chairman Paul Kinsella, Pat Dunphy Secretary, Barry Hickey Treasurer, Joe Pyke Bord na nOg Chairman, Ned Buggy Northern Secretary, Jimmy Walsh Former Southern Secretary and Supporters Club Secretary Jim Freeman while Laois County Board was represented by Chairman Dick Millar and Hurling Board Chairman Donal Deegan. Another very welcome guest was former GAA President Paddy Buggy.

There was a good atmosphere around the village of Clogh on theSunday night and all were agreed that the Cloneen organisers could be happy with a job well done as everything fell into place on a well co-ordinate event.
