History

A section detailing the rich cultural heritage of North Kilkenny

Clogh takes its name from the 13th Century castle Clogh-ma-leithid.

Although Clogh and its environs is now mostly a farming area, from the 17th Century until the late 20th Century, Clogh and all the neighbouring town lands of Moneenroe, Coolbawn, Cloneen, Crutt, Massford, etc. had working mines. Although there is very little visual evidence of its mining history, there still remains a pride and awareness of the past particularly in the new generations of the old mining families.

In Clogh graveyard there is a monument to Michael Fenlon described as "an unrecognised mechanical genius". Michael reconstructed the first Boulten and Watt steam engine for use in Doonane Colliery. (Photo Required)

CASTLECOMER MINERS AND THE WATERFORD ELECTION (Source-The Nationalist & Leinster Times, 26th December 891

Mr. Denis Kilbride MP read the following copy of a resolution from the miners of Castlecomer on Monday night in Waterford: "At a meeting of the miners and other labourers held in Clogh on Sunday evening, the following resolution was passed by acclamation: 'Resolved - that as it has been reported in the press that Mayor-elect of Waterford has stated that Mr. Davitt had imported a large number of miners from Castlecomer mining district by night into the City of Waterford, we beg to give this assertion the most emphatic contradiction. There is no foundation whatever for such an assertion. We rely on the good sense and petriotism of the workingmen of waterford of every class to support and vote for Michael Davitt, whose lifelong sympathies have ever been with the workingmen of every nation, and whose advocacy in their cause must not only be powerful in the House os Commons, but must serve to rally round him other earnest and powerful advocates of the labour question. Signed on behalf of the Castlecomer miners and other labourers - John Delaney, William Maher, Lawrence Brennan, James Harding.
