Kilkenny secure the West County Cup All Ireland Football Final

Croke Park

Sunday 23rd September 2007

Kilkenny 3-5 London 2-5
Kilkenny secured the West County Cup for the first time in their history when withstanding a valiant London challenge in the TG4 ladies JFC final. Two goals inside the opening seven minutes courtesy of full-back Sarah McCarthy's penalty and a well-struck Lydia Phelan shot sent the Kittens on their way. London fought back to actually gain the lead thanks to goals from Sharon Lynch and Shauna Keogh either side of the interval, but Kilkenny, with captain Caitriona Grace leading by example, responded in style. 17-year-old camogie starlet Marie Dargan returned from the sin bin to send Orla McCormack in the clear mid-way through the second half and the super sub, who had looked extremely dangerous since her introduction, unleashed a shot that was too powerful for Sharon Murphy to keep out.

Marie Dargan followed up with a pointed free from distance and though the industrious Kelly Ann Cottrell missed an open goal and Natalie O'Connor reduced the deficit to three points late on, time ran out on the gallant Exiles.

RAILYARD ladies won the Kilkenny Intermediate County Final in Nowlan Park with a hard earned win over Mullinavat. A strong performance from the Railyard in the first half saw them in front by 0-10 to 1-1 at the interval. The southerners fought back gallantly in the second half bur even a last minute goal from a penalty was not enough to catch the Railyard who ran out winners by 0-14 to 2-5. The Railyard team was : Noelle Curran, Noreen O'Keeffe, Jo Roche, Ann Marie Walsh, Andrea Murphy (0-1), Edwina Keane, April Purcell, Martina Maher, Breda Roche, Catriona Grace (0-4), Mairead Corrigan, Miriam O'Keeffe (0-2), Alice Farrell (0-1), Graine Daly (0-1), Jenna Phelan (0-5). A very keenly contested match saw the lead change hands several times with Railyard trailing by a point at half time.
